Two full days, Saturday 28 November and 5 December 2026
Suicide takes a heavy toll on our community and can leave survivors with a heaviness around the loss and what-if questions.
Following conversations at our Elderman Gathering about suicide prevention and the importance of being better equipped to support men in distress, we have secured funding for Mental Health First Aid Training for our members in Victoria.
MHFA will allow you to recognise the signs, start the conversation and respond when a man is struggling.
The Training
This training from certified instructor Mike Hagan will run over two full days, Saturday 28 November and Saturday 5 December. Mike is an experienced Mental Health Workplace Consultant, presenter and storyteller who brings more than twenty-five years of professional experience to the room.
Participants who successfully complete the course requirements, including a short online assessment, will receive formal accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider. This accreditation is valid for three years, after which a brief refresher course can be completed.
The Venue
The Currawong Bush Park Conference & Environmental Centre in Doncaster East.
The Cost
Thanks to a generous donation from Men of Malvern, the cost is now just $50 per person.

Why Mental Health First Aid?
We all know what it means to be there for a mate.
But what happens when the conversation becomes more serious?
When someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, talking about suicide, withdrawing from others, or showing signs that something isn’t right, it can be difficult to know what to say—or what to do next.
Mental Health First Aid gives you practical skills and confidence to respond.
MHFA is an evidence-based, internationally recognised training program that has helped millions of people develop greater mental health literacy and confidence in supporting others.
The training provides practical tools for:
For men who are already creating spaces where other men can talk openly, connect and be supported, these are valuable skills to have.
This opportunity is possible through the generous support of Men of Malvern, making an internationally recognised MHFA qualification available at an exceptional cost.

Meet your instructor — Mike Hagan
25+ years of experience in health, safety, wellbeing and HR
The MHFA course material is excellent. But great training is about more than the material.
Mike Hagan is an experienced Mental Health Workplace Consultant, presenter and storyteller who brings more than twenty-five years of professional experience to the room.
His career has taken him from working as a fitter and turner, union representative and Health and Safety Representative, through plant management and safety management at the UK’s largest nuclear plant, to fourteen years as a senior health, safety, wellbeing and HR executive.
That breadth of experience gives Mike a rare ability to connect the principles of Mental Health First Aid with the realities of people’s lives and workplaces.
His approach is practical, engaging and grounded in real-world experience.
You won’t simply be sitting through a course. You’ll be learning how these skills can actually be used.
